What the C400 Actually Is
The C400 sits in Canon's Cinema EOS line above the C70, below the C700. It's a cinema camera that doesn't require a giant cart to move around set. It has full-frame sensor, internal ND, dual-base ISO, Canon Log 2 and Log 3, up to 6K. It shoots clean in low light and holds highlight detail the way Cinema EOS cameras tend to.
If you've shot on a C300 or a C70 before, the C400 will feel immediately familiar. If you haven't, the learning curve is short. Canon's menu system is one of the more intuitive ones in the cinema space, and the ergonomics are solid — it's a camera you can actually hand to an operator and trust them to be up to speed fast.
Where It Works
Commercial and branded content: The C400 works here. Clean image, flexible exposure latitude, internal NDs that hold up in mixed lighting situations. You're not fighting the camera to get a usable frame.
Music videos: It handles stylized looks well. If your colorist has a vision, the C400 gives them something to work with. Log 2 has plenty of room.
Documentary and run-and-gun: Compact enough to move fast, capable enough to not be the weak link. The internal ND system earns its keep on location shoots where you don't want to stop and stack filters every time the sun moves.
Narrative and short film: Full-frame, cinema glass compatibility, cinematic color science. For indie productions that want a legitimate cinema camera without the footprint of a larger body, it's a smart call.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book
The C400 uses Canon's EF and PL mount system, so plan accordingly. If you're building a package from our shelf, let us know what you're going for and we'll make sure everything lines up.
Battery life is solid but bring spares on longer days.
And if you're used to shooting mirrorless hybrids, give yourself a few minutes with the menu before call time. It's not complicated, but it's a different workflow.
