If You Missed It: On-Set Workflows for DIT, Data Management & Video Assist

The session was a deep dive into three of the most critical (and often misunderstood) roles on a modern film or TV set: the DIT, the Data Manager, and Video Assist. Whether you're just starting out or you've been on set for years and want to sharpen your technical game, this one was packed with practical, real-world knowledge.

What was covered

Gaylen kicked things off by breaking down what a DIT actually does — because the title means different things on different productions. From there, the conversation moved into the technical meat: camera signals, color pipelines, and how log images differ from graded ones. If you've ever wondered what a LUT actually is doing to your image, or how CDLs and tools like Livegrade function across different camera systems like ARRI, RED, and Sony, this workshop laid it all out clearly.

One of the most valuable parts of the session was how Gaylen framed workflow flexibility — the reality that no two productions run the same way, and understanding the why behind a workflow is what separates a great DIT from someone just following a checklist.

From there, the workshop shifted into data management: how to build a proper data station, which backup software is worth knowing, how to organize media so nothing falls through the cracks, and how to run quality control under the kind of pressure that comes with a live set. This stuff isn't glamorous, but it's the backbone of protecting every frame the camera captures.

The session wrapped with a history and overview of Video Assist — where it came from, how it's evolved, and what it looks like today in both union and non-union contexts. Gaylen also covered how Video Assist and DIT collaborate, which is one of those topics that rarely gets discussed openly but makes a huge difference in how smoothly a production runs day to day.
